Bank Cover Worker
We have an exciting opportunity for a Bank Cover Worker to play a vital role in providing support at First Base Day Centre.
Position: Bank Cover Worker
Location: Brighton - First Base Day Centre
Hourly Rate: £13.45 per hour (inclusive of 12.07% holiday pay) (From 1 April 2025 the hourly rate will increase to £14.12 per hour, inclusive of 12.07% holiday pay)
Hours: 0 (Shift Patterns: 08:30 – 13:30 or 08:30 – 16:30)
Contract: Casual
Closing Date: Friday 4th April 2025 (23:59)
About the role:
As a Bank Cover Worker, you will be working for a people-led organisation whose mission and values is to inspire change across Sussex.
The Bank Cover Worker will support the First Base Team by playing a vital role in running open access sessions for people who are rough sleeping. The work contributes directly to supporting clients to end homelessness and get off the streets. The focus of the role is on some of the more practical aspects of running the service and includes managing and allocating client lockers, laundry bookings, food preparation and service, handling donations and deliveries. The role also includes introducing clients who are new to the service, showing them around the building and making them feel welcome, as well as carrying out triage assessments of needs. The Bank Cover Worker will provide ongoing support to clients, supporting the work of the case work team by carrying out specific pieces of work, for example supporting clients with a benefit claim or to register with a GP.
About First Base Day Centre:
Based in the centre of Brighton, Frist Base Day Centre provides support to assist people who are street homeless or vulnerably housed to move on from the streets or insecure accommodation and realise their aspirations. First Base operates client-centred specialist services to support people to address their healthcare needs, start realising their aspirations through work, learning and leisure and find a place they can call home.
Key Responsibilities:
To be successful in the role of Bank Cover Worker you will need to have great communication skills and be committed to the values of the organisation. Some of the key skills and experience you will need to bring with you include:
- Building supportive relationships with clients who use the Day Centre.
- Work alongside the case-work team to support clients to access benefits, healthcare, meaningful occupation and accommodation.
- Support the practical aspects of running an open access service for people who are rough sleeping, including setting up and clearing down before and after sessions, sorting donations, and meal preparation.
- Support clients new to the Day Centre, providing an induction to the service and informing them of the range of services provided.
- Experience of working with people in a client facing role, including sometimes managing difficult or aggressive situations, ensuring the safety of self, colleagues, and clients.
- Keep accurate and detailed records of support provided to clients using our secure database.
We’re looking for someone who is passionate about supporting people who are experiencing homelessness, able to talk to people who are going through a difficult time and inspire people to feel that change is possible. We’re also looking for someone who is happy carrying out practical tasks and who recognises the importance and value that this role contributes to the service as a whole.
Person Specification:
To be successful in the role of Bank Cover Worker you will need to have great communication skills and be committed to the values of the organisation. Some of the key skills and experience you will need to bring with you include:
- Commitment to meeting the needs of people who are street homeless
- Ability to relate to people at all levels - good interpersonal and communication skills
- Ability to manage risk when working with clients, including working with clients who are new to the service, and we have little information about.
- The ability to work with people who might sometimes feel angry or frustrated and to manage difficult or aggressive situations in a calm and professional manner.
- Empowering people who are homeless and inadequately housed.
