Support Worker – Hastings Young People’s Service (HYPS)
We have an exciting opportunity for a Support Worker to play a vital role in providing support at our Stage One (Brittany Road working 2 days) and Stage Two (Southwater Road working 3 days).

Hours: 37 hours per week (shifts will be worked between Tuesday – Saturday between the hours of 09:00 – 22:00. Shifts will be 7-8 hours)

About HYPS:
As a Support Worker, you will be working for a people-led organisation whose mission and values is to inspire change across Sussex.
Brittany Road (Stage One) is a 9-bed high support service, taking clients aged 16 to 25 with complex needs and who require housing. Southwater Road and Milward Rd (Stage Two) are 6 bed shared houses with support being provided by a dedicated key worker. Residents will move on from these houses into more independent accommodation including its own Stage Three self-contained flats at our Filsham Road project.
The structured life skills program equips people to live independently. The program explores a range of topics and cover arears such as cooking, budgeting, form filling, social skills, being a good neighbour and tenant, health and safety, getting into work and is delivered at all stages within this pathway.
About the Role
You will provide daily support to the clients within Stage One and Two of the HYPS service. You will spend two days based at Brittany Road – Stage One focusing on supporting the clients to work through their pathway to independence; this could involve supporting them to access mental health services, applying for benefits, help with cooking and budgeting and managing their relationships. The Support Worker will also help with the day-to-day running if the project.
The other three days will be based at HYPS’ Southwater Road Stage 2 property where you will oversee the support of 6 clients continuing to engage them with their pathway to independence and support them to move on into independent accommodation. You will have key work responsibilities where you will complete their support plans and risk assessments. You will also be partly responsible to ensure all health and safety regulations are maintained and completed.
You will provide support using psychologically informed, strength’s based and solution focused practice in a trauma informed way, to young people living in Stage One and Two accommodations and to equip the residents with the skills and tools they will need to live independently.
Key Responsibilities:
- Establish, maintain, and further develop effective relationships which engage each young person so that assistance and support can be offered within a constructive relationship.
- Be responsible for health and safety requirements, as well as making autonomous decisions about individual resident’s requests and behaviour whilst on shift.
- In partnership with the client produce a support action plan that is psychologically informed and SMART, working in a strength’s based and solution focused approach. Hold regular support reviews. To attend external reviews and meetings as required.
- To ensure rent is collected on a timely basis from residents. This will mean ensuring Housing Benefit claims are submitted and maintained, payment plans are in place for working residents and the service charge is received.
- To help identify suitable move on accommodation and work with local private rented sector initiatives.
Person Specification:
To be successful in the role of Support Worker you will need to have great communication skills and be committed to the values of BHT Sussex. Some of the key skills and experience you will need to bring with you include:
- Experience of working with the complex support needs of young people (16yrs-25yrs).
- Experience of working with one or more of the following: resettlement, substance/alcohol misuse, mental health issues, childhood trauma/sexual abuse, personality disorders, self-harm or low self-esteem, people with a history of offending, working in a trauma informed way and in a strength’s based and solution focussed approach.
- A good knowledge of relevant welfare benefits including Housing Benefit and Universal credit.
- Experience of applying safeguarding vulnerable adults and child protection policies and procedures.
- Ability to work with clients in an empowering way towards independence using psychologically informed practice in a key work 1:1 basis.
